LEEK REGROW GUIDE

Minimalist diagram showing how to regrow leeks from the root base in shallow water.

The Short Version

Leeks regrow the same way green onions do.
Growth comes from the root base, not the stalk.

Water is enough to start the process.

What You Need

  • Leeks with roots intact
  • Shallow container
  • Water

That’s it.

How to Regrow Leeks

  1. Cut the leek, leaving the root base intact
  2. Place the base in shallow water
  3. Keep the water level below the cut surface
  4. Put near light
  5. Change water every few days

New growth emerges from the center.

What to Expect

  • New leaves in 3–7 days
  • Slower growth than green onions
  • Thicker, sturdier shoots

This is normal. Leeks take their time.

When to Stop

  • If growth becomes thin
  • If the base turns mushy
  • If the smell changes

At that point, compost it or plant in soil.

Optional: Move to Soil

If you want longer-term growth:

  • Plant the base in soil
  • Water lightly
  • Harvest as needed

Soil supports stronger regrowth.
