The Short Version
Celery can regrow leaves, not a full stalk.
Growth comes from the crown at the base, using stored energy and water.
This guide shows what works — and what doesn’t.
What You Need
- Celery base (about 2 inches tall)
- Shallow container
- Water
That’s it.
How to Regrow Celery
- Cut the celery, saving the base
- Place the base in shallow water
- Keep the water level below the cut surface
- Put near light
- Change water every few days
New leaves emerge from the center.
What to Expect
- Leaf growth in 5–10 days
- Thin, leafy stalks
- Good flavor for soups and stocks
You will not regrow a full grocery-store celery bunch. That’s normal.
When to Stop
- If the base turns soft or smells off
- If growth becomes weak
- If leaves stay pale
At that point, compost it or plant in soil.
Optional: Move to Soil
Planting in soil:
- Improves leaf size
- Extends growth time
- Still won’t recreate a full head
Soil helps — it doesn’t reset the plant.
