GREEN ONION REGROW GUIDE

Minimalist diagram showing where to cut green onions to prepare them for regrowth.

The Short Version

This visual guide shows how to regrow green onions using just the root base and water.
Green onions don’t need soil to start growing again.
They regrow from the root base using stored energy and water.

What You Need

  • Green onions with roots intact
  • Water
  • Small container (test tube, glass, jar)

That’s it.

What To Do

  1. Cut green onions, leaving the root base intact
  2. Place roots in water
  3. Keep the water line below the cut
  4. Put near light
  5. Change water every few days

What To Expect

  • New growth in 1–3 days
  • Fast vertical regrowth
  • Can be cut and regrown multiple times

Growth slows after a few cycles. That’s normal.

When To Stop

  • If the base gets slimy
  • If the smell turns sour
  • If growth becomes thin and weak

At that point, compost it or plant in soil.

Common Mistakes

  • Submerging the entire onion
  • Letting water stagnate
  • Expecting infinite regrowth

Water starts growth.
It doesn’t replace nutrients forever.

Optional: Move to Soil

If you want longer-term growth:

  • Plant the rooted base in soil
  • Water lightly
  • Harvest as needed

Soil finishes the job.

And that is gow to regrow green onions in water.
