The Short Version
Romaine lettuce can regrow leaves, not a full head.
Growth comes from the base, using stored energy and water.
This is a short-term regrow, not a reset.
What You Need
- Romaine lettuce base (about 2 inches tall)
- Shallow container
- Water
That’s it.
How to Regrow Romaine
- Cut the romaine, saving the base
- Place the base in shallow water
- Keep the water level below the cut surface
- Put near light
- Change water every few days
New leaves grow from the center.
What to Expect
- Leaf growth in 3–7 days
- Small, tender leaves
- Best used fresh
You will not regrow a full romaine head. That’s normal.
When to Stop
- If leaves become bitter
- If the base softens or smells off
- If growth stalls
At that point, compost it or plant in soil.
Optional: Move to Soil
Planting the base in soil:
- Extends leaf growth
- Improves texture
- Still won’t recreate a full head
Soil helps, but doesn’t change the outcome.
